[Hallicrafters] SX146 Meter Movement/5 Least Popular SX's?

Scott,

I used the SX-146 in the last 60's and have very fond memories of it. The
HT-46 was another matter however. What I remember of the SX-146 was that it
was a very quiet receiver, good stability, and with excellent selectivity
if you purchased all of the crystal filters. The big negative was that it
didn't have 1KHz frequency dial readout which the competing Drake and
Collins receivers at the time had. Having to purchase the 100KHz
calibrator, when other receivers of that era built one in, was another
downer I recall. In fairness to Hallicrafters, they were trying to hit a
$300 price point with this receiver and the crystal filter must have been
very expensive at the time. Over all, the SX-146 just didn't match-up well
with the Drake R-4A and R-4B in features and functions and it's sales
suffered as a result. If you added the missing 10M crystals, the AM and CW
crystal filters and the 100KHz calibrator you had a very nice receiver. Of
course that would have added another $150 to the cost. Now days you can add
an inexpensive frequency readout to the SX-146 if you want 1KHz frequency
readout
