I believe that if you dig a bit deeper you will find that they are not 
talking about hollow state technology. Vacuum tubes also refers to glass 
tubes used in medical and several industrial and scientific applications. 
Apparently the US quietly excels in something these days that isnt 
controlled by an Asian country.
Another part of the export may be all the scrap monitor and TV tubes.
