[Hallicrafters] SX-16 partially died on me...

Hi,

Ok, found the problem.

While poking around and checking things, the main dial string was frayed and broke when I tugged on it, so I restrung it. I then turned my attention to the dial pointer and decided I should probably restring that too.

I had rebuilt the pointer assembly a few years back (and forgot I did that, then I remembered!) and never really used the rig, just rebuilt it and shelved it. Apparently the bandswitch became mis-aligned in relation to the dial pointer during the rebuild, it was off by 2 or 3-bands! Back in business. Thanks to all that replied.

Best Regards,

Douglas - 4Z5TO

One thing I would suggest is, if possible, listen to the local oscillator on another receiver.  Its possible its not oscillating on some of the bands or is oscillating weakly. Possible causes are a failure of C-21 or C-22, the two coupling caps for the LO. Also check R-7.  It may be useful to check the socket voltages of the LO, mixer, and RF stages to see what is changing there. I think its still possible something has happened to the band switch, worth at least a very close inspection.
