[Hallicrafters] Roberts 771X or Akai M-9

Since my call for information on the Roberts 771X created a mass of interest
and reminiscent e-mails I will report on the latest.

 

I have pulled the front panel off my 771X. The screws have never been broken
loose since is assembly, even the little washers are still with the screws.
What I believe to be the cams in question (grey slug things) are pot metal,
but appear to be in excellent shape. I'd guess their deterioration is
dependent on where one lives, like near the ocean?

 

Now to re-grease the dried greased moving parts and hope the belts are good
because accessing them looks like lots of fun.

 

Thanks to many of you I have had a good deal of Roberts history filled in
and shared with my cousin Mel Young, who used to work for the Roberts
company. He has been motivated to dig out his late father's Roberts 770 tube
tape deck... buried somewhere in the garage.
