I have had pretty good success on several rigs lately I have refurbished. 
I use scrubbing bubbles and a 1 or 2" paint brush. You can get at most chain
stores. It foams up, wait about 10 minutes, then hose off
after going over all you can with the brush.
If it's extra heavy grime, you may do the process twice. 
But use common sense and remove anything that water will hurt like speakers 
and dial inlay's ...... don't hose it, but
use cotton Q-tips on that and other fragile parts.
