Skip,
I am not familiar with the connector application or product you note, but I'll give it a go at maybe helping.

If you are using the AMP/Tyco M24308 tool the white end is to remove the wired contact and the red to insert it.  This is all done from the wired end of the connector and not the mating face.

If the tool is something else generally the fully encircled end is the extraction end and the semi-circular end is the insertion end.

Sometimes using these tools can be a trick if you have never done it before.
Slip the removal side over the wire and work it down into the wired contact cell as far as you can.  Do not force it or put too much pressure on it, it can break or you can run the end facing your hand through your hand.  Then turn and wiggle the tool around in the cell.  While holding the wire taunt pull back on the wire and tools (holding the wire against the slot in the tools handle).  The wire and contact should come out.  Sometimes it'll take a little wiggling.

Sometimes when the extract end will not fit into the cell enough to release the holding fingers I use the insert end and wiggle it around until I feel the contact release.

Off subject but maybe someone can help.  I'm trying to remove pins from a King aircraft GPS connector.  I have the Insert/Extract tool recommended.  The Tool has a white section and a red section (it pulls apart) with slightly different ends.  Both ends slip over the pin in the connector but the pin does not want to come out when I extract the Tool.  Do I push the extractor Tool in and then push with a wire at the other end or what?  Is the White end for extraction and the Red end for insertion (or vice-aversa)?  Thanks in advance for help.
