The economy definitely has a lot to do with prices. However, you may be overlooking the fact that the best of the best have been sold and the leftovers are now available; in most cases. Have you seen an SX-88 photo shoot close up that looks like a quality restored or new radio? Could be the owner loves the radio and won’t part with the radio for any reason. If one should appear on ebay that looked new and was guaranteed to operate to specs with a return in 7 days option, is there one of you that would say that it would not sell for a premium??? Look at the Hallicrafters Guy, He does an outstanding, exceptional job restoring the SX-100 and people trip over the bodies to own that beautiful instrument. Could be some of the people who restore these instruments are not doing the job they did in the past or maybe don`t want to invest the time.
The economy has changed two things. People will not pay outlandish prices for marginal or rusty, corroded junk, but still pay the old premium for quality restoration. Invariably, it`s the craftsmanship combined with the nostalgia of the radio that sets the price.
If your in the business simply for investment and have a lot of esoteric anachronistic radios to sell that are not restored, sell them, we will be happy to buy them for pennies on the dollar. Three or four years from today, you will pull a hand full of what`s left of your hair. Sorta like selling stock at the bottom and buying it at the top?? Very good investment practice???
Sometimes the value of these things transcend $$$$$$$$$$$$.
Kindest regards Jim K9AXN
