Jim,
What specific model/features should I look for on that function gen? I 
do want the sweep option.

Something easily forgotten is you can use a function generator to align
stages  below 100 Kc. then use a regular RF for other schemes.  My
function gen will go from near 0 up to 10 meg.  It is a later, SS,
version but will do the job.  If you find one with the sweep function,
all the better.

I use mine for all IF alignment in the sweep mode.  Mine cost 10 bucks
at a decent hamfest.
