The life of the 12BY7 really varies.

I owned one SX-101A for about 10 years, and never had to replace it.

I got it and an HT-37 from the Club in Columbus, GA.  They were 
replacing it in the City Emergency Comms center with a TS-520.

I got the two for a whopping $75!  No one else in the club was willing 
to take on a separate TX/RX setup.  Youngsters that couldn't figure how 
to get them on the same frequency together!
