You might be quite surprised to discover how well that nicotine has
preserved everything. It will be quicker in the long run and yield better results
if you disassemble the unit, wash everything and blow dry including the
chassis. I would probably remove the transformers and chokes and clean them
separately but you could always try covering them with plastic bags/ rubber
bands around the bottom and be careful. Richard is right on about the  oven;
I installed one in my shop and use it a lot, even after blowing parts dry
they often go into the oven for a few minutes to be sure there are residual
traces of moisture left behind (for example: between two flanges of
spotwelded sheetmetal). Outside on a table on good hot sunny day will work also.

Has anyone thoroughly cleaned the inside (chassis and components and
transformers) of a Hallicrafters HT 33A amplifier. My acquisition seems to be a
good one electrically, but the inside is totally coated with tar and
nicotine. I have NEVER seen a piece of electronic gear turned completely GOLD
inside by tar and nicotine.

There iare also years of dust and dirty GRIME on the chassis. Looks
AWFUL!!!

I am using Go Jo which doesn' t really introduce as much moisture as plain
water and soap although I do have to get the Go Jo off what ever I put it
on. The cabinet and outside of the chassis and enclosure around amp inside
the cabinet are looking good. It is just the amp chassis and components
that re the challenge.

I am mainly worried about the transformers because they are NOT POTTED.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT but the underside of the chassis and blower fan are
GOLD also. Apparently, the fan drew the cigarette/cigar smoke into the
cabinet and deposited it above and below the chassis where it adhered to
everything.

Your personal experience cleaning inside the HT 33A chassis will be
greatly appreciated. Thanks and 73, John, K5PGW
