Tom & the ist:

I also own a Underwood communications mill, just like the
one I used as
a radio op on the USS Damato (DDE871) in 1952. Used to be
able to copy
40+ wpm on that old thing. . . .

Anyone remember:

V V V de NSS NSS NSS ?

Gene, WØQFC

All of the chain office supply places have the more
common ribbons. They can also be found on the web. A good
source for high-quality ribbons and especially ribbons for
rare machines is:

I have a small collection of old typewriters but have
never found a mill. They are around and at least two
companies, Royal and Remington, made them for the Navy.
The Navy "wheel" I most remember was NPG vvv vvv vvv
NPG NPG NPG F F F and repeated to infinity. I used to tape
record the five letter code groups and play them at
half-speed for practice. I also used to practice copying
press from mostly KPH although sometimes copyed KFS or the
east coast stations WCC and WSL. All sent via tape at about
25 wpm. I wish I had recorded that or even the "wheels" at
other stations, they would be valuable records now. My
favorite wheel was the one from KSE (RCA here in Los
Angeles) sometimes he would run something like:

QRA RCA LOS ANGELES RADIO DE KSE KSE KSE TFC? OBS? ANS 6
8 12 KHZ AR K Most just sent CQ or V's
