While not "ARRL perfect" (or engineering school),  I sometimes connect the 
siggen to the input point (atop the variable cap) WITHOUT a ground... works 
just fine, considering what you're dealing with.  Later (for RF and ANTENNA) 
trimmers - I just use a nearby loop.

As one of my old Chiefs told me - "Kid, there's the right way, and the way 
that's easy -- often, they're the same"
