A lot of replies cease to have any meaning at all if the message to which the reply is made is completely stripped. Now repeating all of the messages before that message is another thing.
Editing the message to which the reply is made to reference only the topics to which you are replying makes much more sense. That is, when the reply is only to a specific portion of the message then the remainder of that message can be deleted without losing any intelligence. But, just to delete all of the message can result in considerable confusion.
As for top or bottom replies: Frankly, I MUCH prefer a top reply because the new information is presented first. If the reader needs clarification then he/she can continue to the "old" message. Often, there is no need to clarify the new message and the reader does not have to "wade through" previous messages to understand the information. But, if there is a question about what has been "said" in the past, then keeping the portion of the message to which the reply has been made makes perfect sense.
