Zumwalt did not become CNO until the Nixon appointment July 1, 1970. He served as Commander U. S. Naval Forces, Vietnam and Chief of the Naval Advisory Group, U. S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, from 1 October 1968 to 15 May 1970. Prior to that as Director of the Chief of Naval Operations Systems Analysis Group from August 1966 to August 1968, he organized and directed the Systems Analysis Division and served as Deputy Scientific Officer to the Center for Naval Analyses.
So prior to his appointment in '63 and '64 our squadron was flying extension of the Dew Line missions out of Iceland. We flew the WV2 (navy designation) using the ARC-38 and an auto-loading 150 foot trailing wire antenna. The ARC 38 was a 100 watt am/cw rig. In late '64 we got the ARC-38A which had the SSB Mod. In '63 the plane Commander had the authority, when we were in-route, off station, to grant use of radio equipment to any active ham radio operator. What a kick a perfectly loaded long wire at 22,000 feet. Check with K9HXT ( the golden fist of the north ) he has some great stories "CQ CQ CQ DE DX".

I pity the self made man, he is definitely working at a disadvantage. I cherish the help from God, family and mentors.
