I made an attempt to do that some years ago with one of the old generators  
that used to run the lights on a bicycle. Strictly QRP. The generator 
output is  AC, which had to be rectified, filtered and regulated. It was supposed 
to run a  small CW transmitter and receiver. What I should have done was 
just use it to  keep the charge on a battery, as keeping a bicycle going at a 
relatively  constant speed and tapping out Morse with one thumb turned out 
to be quite an  exercise - literally.
 
I do have an experimental Geiger counter that runs from a barbeque grill  
lighter. That is sort of "free" energy, but again takes a bit of thumb work.  
Never needs batteries. :-)
