I had that happen when e-mailing Trylon and thought it might be due to 
me using SMTP forwarding as my mail and domain are not on the same 
server as my Internet connection, but it works here so the only things I 
can think of is he may be using an ISP that has been black listed. Mail 
servers do not normally care if you are sending "secure" mail or not. It 
would be interesting to see a copy of the actual error message.

Is he using the same address he used to sign up for the group?

Possibly he could take a look at the headers, or have some one 
knowledgeable about networking do so

Wish I could offer something more substantial.
