Hi Bob,
	I usually use a small drop of synthetic oil, about 10-20 grade, or 
synth. gear oil to lube the bearings, some use a bit of Lubriplate or 
similar grease.  I use a paint brush to dust the plates.
	But, your scratchiness probably comes from the shaft sliders between 
sections.  A drop of DeOxit on each of them should cure that problem.
