Tim,
Shaft extensions do seem viable -- I've thought about a brass tube coupler expoxied to the shaft and an extension made from the old pots. -- may play with that idea.
While playing with the phasing, I found a very distorted waveforms from the rf phase shift network. I went back and checked the carrier oscillator adjustment. The frequency was close but the voltage wasn't. I readjusted T104 and the phase shift started working producing very clean sine waves. I am able to use the c and l adjustments and get a good 90 degree relationship at equal magnitudes. I am hoping that O-scope probing didn't introduce too much loading. The proof will have to wait until I get new pot s soldered in the carrier balance controls.. In my quest, to isolate the SSB problem, I noticed the ceramic bypass on the balanced modulators look crumbly and funny so I replace them as well. Thanks for the response.
