I probably walked right past your old theater

I'm afraid you didn't, Todd. Both my old haunt "B" houses were torn down
in the 60s and the only one left, the Strand, now the "Fine Arts" is the
only one of the original 5 in-town theatres left standing. Back in my day, it
usually showed Grade B double features and I seldom went there. My only
memory of that place was once I went to see "Dead Man's Eyes" starring Lon
Chaney, Jr. It scared me so badly that I had nightmares for a month! It later
showed X rated flicks until it finally started showing foreign films and
independent productions as I believe it still does. Interestingly enough, 2
doors down at 38 Biltmore Avenue was the home of Freck Radio and Supply
Company. They had a large ham department and sold electronic parts of all
kinds, mostly to radio and TV repair shops. I walked past the Strand several
times a week on my way to Freck's. It was owned by Tenneson Freck, W4WL Some
kids hung out in the soda shops, my gang hung out at Freck's. Further down
the street was Freck Radio Company, owned by Tennison's brother Tom, W4MC.
It was your general tv repair and appliance store.

I believe that soda fountain was in the old 5 and 10 Cent Store. As you
saw, most everything left in downtown Asheville is either a crafts store,
restaurant or book store. Most everything else is at the malls West of town.
