Julian,
You might check at a local RadioShack for a discontinued All band portable.
They used to have several models, some of the more advanced ones had a BFO
for SSB/CW reception. Some were Grundig clones and other mfgs.
A Grundig Yacht Boy 400, or a Sony ICF-SW7600 are long since discontinued
but offer very good performance, both have SSB mode. The Sony is even
selectable SB!. Selectivity is nothing to brag about, but general coverage
digital tuning and good sensitivity at the price is hard to beat, besides
size and battery powered.
They do NOT have any VHF coverage however.
My $0.02 comment.....

Subject: [Hallicrafters] OffTopic ... All band portable receivers?
Perhaps some of you wise folks can recommend a handheld all band receiver? I
bought an Icom IC-R3 about a year ago (the Japanese version that also covers
cell frequencies, not that that is important to me) and have been
disappointed with it, for several reasons:
A) very confusing controls ... I have to read the instruction manual every
time I use it!
B) poor sensitivity ... My SX28 picks up more stuff!
It also has a video mode, but even with an x10 wireless camera next to it,
barely brings in a picture.
I mainly want to use it for emergency services and listening on the ham
bands.
So I'm looking for something similar but better, and wondered if anybody
could suggest something?
Thanks, and apologies for being off topic.
Julian
