[Hallicrafters] OffTopic ... All band portable receivers?

Perhaps some of you wise folks can recommend a handheld all band receiver? I bought an Icom IC-R3 about a year ago (the Japanese version that also covers cell frequencies, not that that is important to me) and have been disappointed with it, for several reasons:
A) very confusing controls ... I have to read the instruction manual every time I use it!
B) poor sensitivity ... My SX28 picks up more stuff!

It also has a video mode, but even with an x10 wireless camera next to it, barely brings in a picture.

I mainly want to use it for emergency services and listening on the ham bands.

So I'm looking for something similar but better, and wondered if anybody could suggest something?
