I was advised some time ago a problem you might encounter trying to
match old paint is availability (or lack of it) of the much smaller
size metallic particles commonly used in paint formulas many years ago.
This is possibly why it is difficult to repaint an HRO-60 so it does
not look like a repaint from 10 feet away. If simply improving the
appearance is the primary goal then whatever is a fairly close match
and currently available might be OK. For "rattle can" work some of the
best aerosol spray lacquers are available at your local NAPA auto parts
store. The NAPA/ Martin-Senour aerosols have a spray head that sprays a
6" fan pattern and lays down an easy to control smooth consistent coat.
Martin-Senour #7257 semi-gloss black lacquer in the tall can is one of
the smoothest and nicest looking semi-gloss lacquers out there and in
my opinion with one thin overcoat will reproduce the crystalline
appearance the original crackle and wrinkle finishes better than any
other.
