For what it may be worth at this point in time:

If you're checking the transformer and finding a short to ground, with the tunes out ant the transformer still in the circuit, be SURE to check the by-pass caps (if any) from the tube plates to ground.  These are often included in the circuit to roll-off the highs.  If one shorts, it'll kill the transformer in a big hurry.  I found an open transformer in an S-76 from a hamfest; the cap was shorted and that had fried it.

Also:  You could possibly have intermittent shorts in one or both of your output tubes.  Give them a thorough test; tap on them and see if a short happens.
