Jeezus.... I can't believe what I just read.

Oh well - Pull the darned 5U4 OUT OF THE BLOODY SOCKET - Now, replace ALL of 
the capacitors - electrolytics, Black Beauties (especially), and bypass 
caps.  PERHAPS the transformer might still be intact, but the chances are 
NOT GOOD.  Keep in mind, the thing is 55 years old, and you plugged IT IN - 
basically you performed an "assisted suicide".

Now that the rectum-finder is out of the socket, bring the AC voltage up 
very, very slowly, AND MONITOR THE INPUT CURRENT DRAW.  If you're lucky, 
you'll have full AC output on all of the windings  -  you can go from 
there - if the HV output is zilch - start perusing Ebite for another 
transformer, as they're made of "unobtanium" these daze.
