Here's a little more troubleshooting that I did before I got your responses re: the Variac.

I'm thinking that the output xformer is shorted. Here's why: when I disconnected the center tap, the rectifier did not turn cherry red. I then reconnected the center tap and left the output xformer leads connected to the plate of each 6V6. When I disconnected the other lead to the plate of each 6V6 (in each one, that lead goes to the tone switch), the recitifer went back to glowing cherry red. In other words, the one and only way to prevent glowing rectifier plates was to take the output transformer out of the circuit. 

Here's what I see: (1) when the output xformer is removed from the circuit, the symptoms don't occur. (2) when the out xformer is put back into the circuit, put the rest of the radio's plate supply is disconnected, the symptoms occur.
