[Hallicrafters] Best RX?

Its referred to as MDS and that is a very subjective measurement and can
vary 20dB or so among users. I use a properly matched generator to radio,
quad shielded coax and a GR output meter. A signal that is 3dB above the
noise is my benchmark; I can hear way below that from decades of working DX
in the noise from 160 to microwave. Its been my experience that many home
shops do not have the proper test setup which includes excessive signal
leakage from the generator and coax.

I have found that the LDS, least discernible signal, is really more
meaningful than doing a S+N/N measurement. Other than that, I basically
agree with the test parameters.
I use service monitors with accurately calibrated attenuators when servicing
receivers, have Tektronix oscilloscopes, etc.

The comments I have read so far on this matter have all been pretty
subjective. The real measure of the "quality of a receiver" is the
sensitivity, selectivity, gain, and S+N:N ratio. The only way to test this
performance is with calibrated test equipment. So to settle this issue those
who own the various rigs in question should take them to a second party with
calibrated equipment and get the rigs tested. Then post the results. We can
build a database of the results and settle the question. Any one living in
the Kansas City area can bring their rig to my shop and I will test and post
the results, NO CHARGE. I would encourage all who have the proper equipment
to do the same in their area. The tests are simple and can be performed
without getting inside the rigs.
