Raymond Moore's book lists three variations:
SX-111 Early version 1960-61. 12 tubes
SX-111 Later version Remarks: "Adds crystal calibrator to original SX-111
SX-111 MK 1 1961-62. 14 tubes. Remarks: "Adds product detector to
SX-111
So you could have an SX-111 with 12, 13, or 14 tubes. The chassis would
either be unmarked (original) or Mark 1.
Since the 101A was in production until 1962 and the SX-115 from '61 thru
'64, it seems reasonable to infer that it was not initially intended as
an SSB receiver, and the product detector was added only after the 101A
was discontinued. This gave them a mate for the HT-37 that still could
be sold for half the price of the 115.
