If you are interested only in SSB and are willing to use the receive function of a transceiver, the SR-150 receive function is designed much the same as the SX-117 but with a crystal filter and has better audio.  It is one of the quietest of the Hallicrafters radios.   THIS IS SIMPLY THOUGHT PROVOKING DON'T GET CRAZY.

The SX-117 noise limiter is a modern marvel --- performs as well as most noise blankers and better than some with today's non-impulse noise.  

If you happen to have an SX-117 that is at the most current level, you will find one strange behavior: the S-Meter sees things that are out of the band pass.  Easily corrected by going back one level --- changes the sense point.
