[Hallicrafters] Best RX?

The SX-115 takes the prize for ham band only. Ive worked on a few SX-117's
and there is no comparison but I like its looks. The 115 hears as well on
10M as my hot rodded 75A4 and fully restored R-390A. The funky dial is my
only complaint but its used often in the vintage SSB station.

The best for general coverage is the SX-73/R-274 hands down. Since the
HQ-180 here developed SMD Ive been using the SX-73 regularly, its even
credible on SSB. And I had to keep checking the name plate because it doesnt
drift! The secret is the turret tuner which can be a pain when its cleaning
time.....same as the National catacomb tuners.
They are out there if you keep looking and prices are in the real nice
NC-183D range. Other than that the SX-28/28A/32 are classics, everybody
should have at least one. And if you like the oldie looks, dont pass up a
SX-17; all done up they really play well.

The SX-101 series are all slugs IMO, Ive worked on them all and own a
pristine 101A. My biggest complaint is sensitivity on the higher bands,
someone really screwed up in the coil designs or something as a NC-300 blows
it away as do bone stock 75A2/75A3's I have to compare with and those are no
gems either. Back in the 60's a friend in the same town, K1SLZ (SK), had
one of the 101's, I dont remember which version, and we chased a lot of DX
together. I was using the souped up A4 and would announce DX on our little
private 2M FM channel using old taxi rigs. Many times he could not hear them
even on 20M and our antennas were similar. I let him use a NCX-5 loaner for
a week and the next thing I know the 101 and HT-33A is sold, he bought a
NCX-5, VX-501 and NCL-2000 and sold me the CE-100V which is another
story......I just got it back after selling in 92. BTW, Larry kept the
Nationals until he died about 15 years ago.
