Thanks to Walt for the many emails on the SR-2000 and the word doc containing all of the updates and hints.

The Vega had an unusual setup where the pistons or the cylinder walls (I forget which) had a layer of hard chrome on them to prevent galling of the aluminum. One overheat was enough to remove this coating allowing the pistons to literally bore the motor out from the inside. Thus the oil burning.

I had a neighbor around the block who had one from the time I was a kid up until I moved in 2001 and it didn't burn a drop of oil and looked like brand new. He simply never overheated it and took excellent care of it..

I am only 45, but muscle cars were cheap when I got my license. Almost all of the people that had them and were selling them cheap were married and moved onto family cars and the gas crunch had people dumping them cheap.
I bought a 409 completely rebuilt and ready to go for 500 bucks, a 348 for 200 bucks. My 64's cost me from 15 bucks up to 350, the most I spent on them. Nobody wanted this stuff.. If I could only go back in time!! Being so cheap, I probably had about 90 cars in the the time between then and now. Richy N2ZD
