Can't resist this either...

When I got my Novice, I started out with a DX-40 and a Hammarlund HQ-129X
which my dad told me to get at Harrison Radio down on Varick St. in NYC in
the summer of 1965. I carried the rx home on the subway and then the New
Haven RR to Greenwich CT where we lived. Dad was really pissed because if
I'd had Harrison send it UPS, he'd have saved the sales tax which they
billed him for! I was 18 then and I was insanely jealous of guys who had
keys to their parents' Chevys. My older brother had a '57 Bel Air
convertible in light blue and white. Sigh...what was I driving for my first
wheels? Dad put me in a 1964 Opel Kadett wagon in that awful baby-poop light
green. It was the display car at the local Buick dealership and dad knew the
owner. I think it was $1400 brand-new. I was made fun of by practically
everyone. We called that car the Opelsauce because it was rotten to the
core. 6V battery, 4-banger the size of a Morris Minor.

I dreamed of any Halli then...
