The HT-33A did use the PL-172 as did the HT-33B.  The original HT-33 used a pair of 4CX300A tubes.  The last of the HT-33A amplifiers had the same configuration as the HT-33B.  That is, more regulator tubes.  My amplifier is marked from the factory as an HT-33A but definitely has the HT-33B circuitry.
