Roger,
Earlier this year, I replaced the RF gain control on my SX-88 (since sold) with a 10K reverse log taper pot sourced from Digi-Key. I couldn't locate a pot with a long shaft anywhere so I used an extension to the front panel. The part number for the pot was KB1031S28-ND and should be still available. Did you mean R-84 which is the 330K resistor in the schematic, not R83? I believe my radio had a different value (15K?) and it was located near the far right of the main terminal strip below the IF section. It is shown on the photo in the manual next to R8 and not connected like the schematic shows. The schematic seems to be in error or else some changes were made in later production (my radio was a RUN 2). I might still have some notes on this somewhere.
