These books really helped me when I was starting out.

ob, I appreciate your comment about the internet creating a problem for
ginners. Your observation prompts me to ask, however, what resources would
ggest for beginners? I subscribe to multiple reflectors and have bookmarked
ny "how to" web sites, but volume of information does not equal quality
formation!

hate to pile on, but just to amplify what Carl, Nick, and others have
id, everyone should just forget about this "bring it up slowly on a
riac" myth. It is almost surely not going to properly reform the
ectrolytics and is likely to have unintended consequences. That's
e problem with the internet - beginners have trouble separating the
ban legends from sound technical facts and procedures.
variac is a useful tool when used as Carl described. (I like to add a
ght bulb in series just for added protection), and with care, proper
asurements, and solid-state rectifiers - can be used for in-situ
forming. But the only way to properly restore a piece of vintage
ectronics is to understand first how it works, and then go through a
stematic troubleshooting and restoration process like has been
scribed. Not only will you end up with a properly-functioning piece
gear but you'll understand how it works!
