[Hallicrafters] s-76

I have a couple of S-76s and like them a lot. The first is as original,
and works well. The second was so beat up when I got it that I decided
to completely re-do the case and make it into a fake rare "USM-76" -
I had a lot of fun doing it:

I added the antenna trim mod which is in an old QST article called
"Gadgets for the S76" which is linked to at the bottom of the second
Web page.
However, I have had some trouble aligning the S76 ... if I remember
correctly the first IF is at 50kHz, much lower than the usual 455kHz.
I'm curious to know why this frequency was chosen?
