BTW the local ACE Hardware has one person who does the paint mixing. If 
time permits they do other things but their job is to mix paint.  All 
three automotive stores have the same kind of arrangement. Now if you 
want to talk price, start purchasing the two part acrylic automotive and 
aviation paint. That stuff can run as much as $300 a gallon. However the 
last I purchased of that was "clear coat" about 5 or 6 years ago.  I 
don't know what it runs now.  We also have one commercial paint store 
for the commercial painters in the area. I typically buy most of my 
paint there with a few exceptions.

Glen, do you use mechanical stripping (CO2, sand, or bead blasting) or 
chemical stripping and how do you handle hinges?  The "piano hinge" is 
by far the most difficult item for me to paint.

Another reason I use a gun. I can do the whole thing suspended much like 
they do on an assembly line. If it comes apart, take it apart.  This can 
make some "difficult to reach" spots, far easier to paint.

I have done furniture with a brush, BUT the finish was aggressively 
thinned and then sanded after every coat. I recently did a table with 
Polyurethane using a brush as my sprayer was "not at home". It took 9 
coats, with each being sanded using 200 to 400 grit. After sanding the 
surface was cleaned with soft shop cloths (very soft paper towels ) and 
then wiped down with mineral spirits. This resulted in a glass like 
finish with no brush marks, but I could have done the same thing is less 
than a quarter of the time (and work) with the sprayer. BTW it took the 
first 4 coats just to fill the grain which was not coarse.

Of course there's a fine line between too much paint resulting in paint 
runs or too little and ending up with a hazy, or even rough  finish.  
I'd hate to show any one what my early attempts looked like.  They 
certainly did not meet the criteria for a glass like finish, or would 
<cough><choke> stand a comparison to a professional job.

Maybe I'm just too fussy and as I remarked earlier that may be why it 
takes me so long and costs so much for many of my projects.  I'm still 
trying to master the "air brush", but my artistic days probably left 
about the time the "familiar tremor" turned up in my hand. Of course I 
blame that on college.  I had two courses where you could take notes or 
pay attention, but not both. I haven't been able to write legibly since 
then and it certainly didn't help with the muscle control when painting.
