Jim,
You asked:
"Do you use a thin layer of Saran Wrap, allowing all shafts to extend
through the Saran Wrap?"
Yes, the single wrap, with shafts extending through the wrap is followed by
the Styrofoam panel followed by the multiple wraps of plastic wrap (a couple
should suffice) followed by the bubble wrap.
"....I wonder if the blue masking tape,
available from hardware stores, might be the best choice.?"
Yes, this is the best choice. You won't need a lot of tape if you pack in
these items with the soft plastic wadding. Be especially careful when
packing the wadding in and around dial string. BTW, if your cabinet cavity
is large, use the soft plastic wadding to tuck in and around the delicate
parts and tubes and then use paper wadding to fill it up. It will go a bit
faster. Always greet the "unpacker" with large print note placed on the top
of the wadding material in the cabinet with an appropriate warning: "Remove
wadding slowly and carefully to avoid damage to delicate parts, especially
around the front panel dial strings and mechanism. If you are careless and
break something, you're on your own!" For eBay sales, always take pictures
as you go through all the steps described by Greg. Get the detail such as
dial strings, etc.
I noted Larry's comments about rolling the radio up in a moving blanket.
Depending on the rest of the pack and the ride to destination, you might get
away with this method. I have received stuff packed so poorly I thought the
component would be toast but, amazingly, it survived without any damage. Go
figure! However, I personally have seen too much damage caused to
unobtainum dial and other delicate mechanisms when a front panel is whacked
(for whatever reason) so I err on the safe side and use the Styrofoam panel
cover with cutouts.
YMMV.
73,
Chris

Thanks for the useful info, Chris. Here's a question: You mention
using a styrofoam panel to cover the front of the radio, and Greg says
to cover the radio with Saran Wrap to prevent chafing in
"Wrap the equipment in several layers of plastic shrink wrap or Saran
wrap. This protects the paint from chaffing damage and prevents packing
materials from getting inside".
Do you use a thin layer of Saran Wrap, allowing all shafts to extend
through the Saran Wrap?
He also mentions using to prevent crystals, etc., from coming out. He
doesn't mention the type of tape, but I wonder if the blue masking tape,
available from hardware stores, might be the best choice. It's
moderately sticky and leaves no residue.
