[Hallicrafters] What is this?

It looks like a very early version of the Super Sky Rider receivers.  The earliest photo of a Super Sky Rider is in my copy of the 1936 ARRL Radio Amateur's Handbook and it is very similar to the one pictured.  However, the one pictured has a slightly different panel arrangement which leads me to believe that it is an earlier model.  The 1937 edition has the "new" version of the Super Sky Rider and the front panel design is completely different.

It looks like it's part SX-9 and part something else. Homebrew?
