[Hallicrafters] SR-400 tracking problem

Hi Sandy:
Congratulations, that is a fine radio. Before you do anything, check
whether it tracks with a dummy load and sig gen. If it does, the antenna is
probably really screwed up. If it doesn't align it. The radio must be
aligned with a 50 ohm non-reactive load and the load left in place for
receive adjustments. The sig gen is attached to the 6Mc trap in front of
the receive side and can be left in place for receive peaking. The manual
actually does address the alignment of tracking but doesn't call it that.
The transmitter must first be set to track on the 10 meter band, end to end
and transmit/receive as per the manual. Then the other bands are set to
transmit and peaked at the low end of the band --- then without changing
anything go to receive and peak the receive coils. Then verify that it will
track to the high end, and if not, re-check the 10 meter tracking
(Transmit/receive). If the 10 meter adjustments are not right, no band will
be correct. Last question. Is there any specific band that will not track?
There was an engineering change that changed a slug which corrected an 80
meter tracking problem. Kindest regards Jim K9AXN
