Another modification for the SX-117 -
Why Some Manuals List Performance Mods
As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I bought a SX-117 / HT-44 pair
at the recent Seattle Hamfest. I've removed some mods that had been
made to the SX-117 and have just completed the "Customer addition of
antenna relay" as outlined in the HT-44 manual. In looking through the
HT-44 manual I find a section (7.2) on SX-117 notes which suggests two
performance modifications to the SX-117 receiver.
I find it interesting that Hallicrafters lists improvements for one
model in a different model's manual. Does this occur in other
Hallicrafters manuals or is it just an anomaly for this pair?

If you words to the effect like "copyright 1963" or something to that
effect, most of the Hallicrafters did not have those words. However some
manuals did imbed a date in the part number for the manual. Also, for the
HT-44 manual, the back page, lower right, it gives the part number for
the manual and below that, the numbers 1163. The number, 1163, I'm told,
stands for November 1963.
Since the HT-44 and SX-117 could be interconnected to do transceiver or
"slave" type functions, Sections 7.1 and 7.2 of the HT-44 manual, does
provide certain modifications to the SX-117 to improve its performance
when used with the HT-44. This is not to be confused with the errata
sheet and updated schematic that also came with most of the HT-44
manuals. This info was added after the manual was printed. I guess it was
easier to add the errata sheet and schematic rather than editing and
reprinting all the existing manuals. Note, it was not uncommon for
manufacturers of that time to include modifications to other pieces of
equipment in their manuals, especially if that equipment was targeted as
an adjunct or integral accessory to the equipment that the manual was
written for. Johnson did this and so did Central Electronics with several
manuals written for their equipment.
