Speaking of 40 not from the boat anchor standpoint, but just operating
in general:

I see a lot, and chase DX on SSB between 7.150 and 7.180. I find the
band is usually quite busy. Lots of CW not only on the bottom end, but
in the middle. Except for the past couple of weeks 40 has been my DX
band of choice. Through most of the winter and spring it was open world
wide from late afternoon to mid morning. Although I've head DX on and
off the last couple of weeks the QRN has been running well over S-9.
OTOH 6-meters has had some nice openings.

I've not found 40 to be in the condition most others have seen. Except
for the disturbed conditions, I see it almost like 20 meters used to be,
but from mid afternoon through the night and into mid morning.

I run center fed, half wave sloping dipoles at an angle of about 50 to
60 degrees off a 100' tower with the top ends being about 10' from the
tower. I would add that I do run the legal limit, but that has no effect
on what I hear. OTOH it does make a big difference on what I work with
the simple antenna.
