My first transmitter was a pair of 6L6's (long before they cost $30-$50
each) that used the complete power supply from a TV set. Actually the
transmitter was built on the old TV chassis. I stripped the chassis with
the exception of the power supply, then using existing sockets added a
6AG7 oscillator, and the pair of 6L6's (the ones then now call "black
plate"). I could get the legal limit (75 Watts) out of that set up
with out straining the standard TV power supply. Back in those days TVs
were no where near as reliable as today's sets, were much more expensive
in those days dollars compared to todays. If we used today's dollars an
early color set cost more than a 60", top end set. The same for
computers. Our first color set and my first computer cost over $4,000.
In today's dollars that'd be between $10,000 and $12,000 Even the B&W
tube type TVs were expensive and power hungry with power supplies
capable of powering a 100 watt output transmitter.

and those boxes were literally free or close to it. I picked up a pair
of them for about $12. I still have a 27" analog set in the basement
that is run off the second output from my satellite receiver.
