Plug it in, turn it on, and leave the plate voltage off. Let it set that
way over night and hope for the best. I've had some really old PL172's
that worked just fine and I've had some that didn't. If you can afford
the freight the straight 8295A ceramic tube is preferable to the old
glass and metal PL172. OTOH a good tested one is probably worth more
than the amp.
There's a lot of good information in the link you were given, but you
might have to read for a while to get what you need.
