One thing I've learned over the years Nick, is that real experts are a
lot like real rich people. They don't need to publicize it or
themselves. The ones who seek to draw attention to themselves and
their self-made legacy are always suspect. I ran into this in the
northeast as well with one fellow who didn't want to bother putting in
the time to learn and understand the history involved, instead
choosing to buy his reputation through gear acquisitions. Needless to
say, it didn't have the desired affect and few, if any, take him
seriously. The 'hands on' folks almost always have better info because
they're actually repairing, restoring, and using the gear instead of
cleaning it up to flip or sit on a shelf. I take most collectors with
a grain of salt until I've known them for some period of time, long
enough to determine that they actually know what they're talking about
and not simply out feeding their ego.
As my mom always told me "It's what you learn after you know it all
that counts".
Words to live by.
