I did know about the SX-73 knob but had always disregarded it due to the sk
irts being different and I just completely forgot about it. Charlie's
reproduction skirt now makes the SX-73 tuning knob a viable option as Todd
pointed out and Todd gets credit for submitting the correct information. I stand
corrected; we want accurate information here to provide good assistance to
folks who are asking for help and to further promote the enjoyment of
Hallicrafters equipment among all of us.
Nick, it appears you are attempting to incite, instigate, disturb and
disrupt the list by posting messages which were sent to you personally, not to
the list. This is the second time you have done this so I forwarded copies
to Duane to alert him of your irresponsible behavior and total disregard
for the rules only so he might keep an eye on things in case the flame war
you are attempting to ignite gets started and creates an unnecessary
disruption to the list and a lot of unwanted bandwidth in everyone's mailbox.
Regards,
Greg Gore; WA1KBQ

Its good to know that there are knowledgeable people that know that the
SX-88 and SX-73 share the SAME Tuning knob minus the skirt.I was accused
by
this 'SX-88 expert' that I have 'limited practical experience' .
Obviously he doesn't know himself whats he's talking about.

You can't make a blanket statement like that based solely upon your
limited practical experience. There are differences between production
runs for
example. I have around fifty NOS .047's here that test OK for example. My
own personal practical experience has shown if the caps have had any
significant voltage on them for a period of time they will usually be
found to have
degraded. Like I said, I tested everything and replaced the capacitors
that leaked. If the caps in the IF filter needed to be replaced I would
have
replaced them. They were practically out in the open and I was pretty
deep
into that job.

so do the AVC and Cathode bypass caps they don't have any significant
voltages across them either but they are plagued with leaakage just like
all
the other capacitors in the rcvr.

That's not correct, they tested OK probably because they don't have
voltage on them.

Interestingly the guy didn't replace the black beauities mounted on the
wafer switches (that control the IF passband). They are just as bad as
the
other.

Yes, superb. Looks pristine. I'm an SX-88 novice: what are the
unlabelled
hrome knobs beneath each tuning dial used for?
If I had this, plus the Tek 570 tube tester currently on auction, I would
ie happy.

Way too rich for my blood, but it looks like someone did a lot of
detailed
estorative work on it.
