[Hallicrafters] ebay SX-88 - Wow!

Todd:

You are correct (as usual)!

I have an SX-73. I just went and took a look and the tuning knob is the
same, sans skirt, of course.

If you have that knob I'd sure like to buy it.

Not true. Actually the same knob was used on at least two other
receivers, though one is fairly scarce (or at least, pricey) and the
other would qualify as rare since under a dozen had been accounted for
last I knew. One is the SX-73 and the other is the R-649 CG/Treasury
AC/DC set. Barrie might have luck tracking down a parts donor SX-73
w/knob and just need to swap the skirts. The skirt on the 73 and 649 is
used only for locking (no logging scale), so it's much smaller in
diameter. Remove the three screws from the back and attach one of
those new repro skirts (if you don't have an original) and away you
go. Hallicrafters was at least as good as other companies when it came
to using the same parts across several different models.

If I still had my spare R-649 I could yank the knob and send it to
you, Barrie. The responsibility for 20% of the surviving examples was
just too much to bear, so I gave it to W3JN. His SX-88 has both its
knobs, he actually was looking for the radio. (o:
