Thanks for  your suggestions.  Here are a couple of additions:

You can use rosin from the baseball diamond, too.  I dissolved a  
modest quantity of it in alcohol years ago and would put the string  
into the jar, or put the stuff onto srings in the radio with a small  
artist's paint brush.

Just watch the streets you walk on.  The street cleaner machines use a  
BIG wire brush that has bristles made from steel about three  
sixteenths inch wide.  The often fly off and can be found on the  
pavement. These make wonderful spring tools.. you can grind the shape  
you need with a dremel tool and lots of  patience.  Or heat the end  
red hot on your stove or Bernzomatic torch and form with common files  
and pliers.
