You do have to be careful, BUT I have two cabinets that are original
with the front bezel (not front panel) a high gloss black. They don't
look right, but they are original. One came on a straight SX-101, but I
don't remember what the other was on. It had to be either another 101 or
HT-32 series. Both cabinets are a satin black or slightly lighter than
true black with those shiny dark black fronts. Typically I prefer a
satin finish of a hue that is in "the ball park". I have one, again
original that has what appears to be, or rather have been a high gloss
metallic gray. I say appears as it's aged badly. It's not damaged. The
surface is actually in good shape. It gives the impression it needs a
good cleaning but the discoloration is in the paint, not on it.

That's the impression I get from the two old cabinets, but they are
originals I've had for many years.
Some 101's have the dial estruntion(sp?) that are flat black or even a
satin finish rather than the more common wrinkle finish. The one with
the metallic gray top might have been refinished, but that would have
had to have been when the thing was very close to new as I've had it so
long.
