[Hallicrafters] SX-88 & SX-101 Knob

He certainly has earned a reputation among almost the entire amateur
community which will probably continue to dog him for years but he might not
care about that. I purchased #444 from him about ten years ago simply because
it was a good one and I had a policy back then to try to obtain every good
one that came up for sale. It is interesting to note former #444 owner
Groome had listed it on WA4KCY's SX-88 registry as new in the box but this was
an embellishment and clearly not the case. I restored #444 and recently
sold it to a well known Collins collector in CT. The closest thing to new in
the box I have ever found is #352 which was obtained from the estate of John
Huey; W9AMU. He had purchased it for his Lake Michigan vacation house
station, used it for a short time and put it back in the box. It was found in a
closet in the original box with the original packing materials. It was
interesting to discover Hallicrafters originally mounted SX-88's to a wooden
pallet inside the box. John's nephew Ron told me at the time of the sale it
received stations but had a hum. This would obviously be an easy fix but I
will probably not touch it in order to keep all the original history intact.

Regards, Greg

Chuck Groome, that name brings back bad memories, a lot of money lost.
