Larry,

I would say wood (definitely) and on the utilitarian side, not the  
kind of thing that would be found in a late 1930's "front" room for  
example.

Browsing through some some QSTs of the period, hams seemed to favor  
plain wood tables, sometimes with a built-in drawer or two.  I can  
scan some pictures if you wold like.  A wooden office desk of the  
period would also be appropriate IMHO.

I have an SX-16 as well.  Fine old receiver.
